World Première of CHRONOSTÁSIS in Athens, Greece

World première of Xρόνοστάσις (Theodore Antoniou at 77) for woodwind quintet (2012) took place on 24 April 2012. The work was presented by the excellent local ensemble, Aiolos Woodwind Quintet, at the Hellenic American University in Athens, Greece.

From programme notes: “The composition was written expressly for the Aeolos Woodwind Quintet as a 77th birthday gift for the distinguished Greek composer, Professor Theodoros Antoniou (born on 10 February 1935), whose music I have admired for a very long time, and whom I have had the honour of meeting thanks to his acquaintance, the outstanding flautist Iwona Glinka, based in Athens, Greece. It was she who introduced me both to Professor Antoniou, whose works I had analysed as a student (and later!) and to other Greek composers whom I have quickly learnt to like and appreciate. The simplicity of the twelve-tone technique of pitch and rhythm organisation is, I hope, reflected by the unpretentious style of the narrative, which balances intensity and discrete humour. The final version of the score was given its shape by Iwona Glinka, who edited it beautifully – and consequently made it accessible to and practical for the performers, contrary to my usual notational habits”.
